BIBLE APPLICATION
"Regard (treat with honor,
obedience, and courtesy) your father and mother, that your days may be
long in the land the Lord yur God gives you." ~ Exodus 20:12 (Amplified
Bible)*
Many
interpret the above scripture as God's call for us to obey our parents.
Not only to obey them, but to honor them, i.e. hold them in high
esteem, behave in a manner that our actions bring honor to them in their
presence as well as in their abscence.
As a
teen I got the hang of this. As an adult I thought I had it covered
until it came down to this elder care situation three years ago. That
is when I learned or began to appreciate, if you will, the fullness of the
"treat with honor and courtesy aspect". Even then, our actions have to be
honorable in the way that we care for our parents, preserve their dignity
where possible, and avoid making them feel as burdens or incompetent.
How do we do this? One simple act at a time.
For e.g.
I found that giving my mom advance warning of our Agenda for the day or week
served to mitigate her panic attacks and her confusion. That way she could
check the weather report, decide what she wanted to wear, and be ready on
time. (an hour to an hour and a half early). Another thing that helped
is that I learned to allow her to do the things that she is comfortable
doing for herself and not assume that she needs constant assistance.
And best of all, wiht the aid of AAA (mentioned in above article) I hired
someone just for her who acts as more of a companion who does household
tasks than a health aide. It is with these actions that we reap the
promised reward: longevity.
